So What is Counselling & Why Might We Need It?

So What is Counselling & Why Might We Need It?

September 2nd 2019

Sounds like a strange question but many people are not sure so I thought this might be a good place to set down some answers.

Essentially, counselling is somewhere that you can go on a one-to-one basis to talk through the difficulties that you are experiencing. Good counselling offers a SAFE space in which to do this and that is probably the single most important factor – that you, the counselee, feel SAFE. Feeling safe requires a Counsellor to be non-judgemental, empathetic and will treat you with unconditional positive regard. These conditions are imperative, but it doesn’t mean that your Counsellor does not challenge your thinking processes. Challenges are made by the counsellor once a trust has been established and at a point when you are ready to receive it, thereby operating within a place of safety for you.

You may well be confused about the many different modalities on offer that have sprung from different theories on human development such as, psychodynamic, person centred, gestalt, CBT, transactional analysis, interpersonal therapy and the list goes on….Perhaps the easiest way to understand this is that most modalities are non-directive approaches which means that the counselee will take the lead in the discussion. Directive approaches such as CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and Gestalt are likely to be led by the Counsellor.

Life is not always easy, but we are normally able to cope with the ups and downs and demands that life places on us. It is usually when things are not working for you anymore and things begin to spiral out of control in some way, that you might consider counselling, particularly if you are struggling to get back on to an even keel. If you are unsure, feel free to call for a free of charge assessment where we can look at whether counselling is right for you. Counselling at Wintern House in Fishguard, Dinas Cross and Haverfordwest. Please call 07788 564009 or email at jane@talktimetherapies.co.uk.
